Mythological Stories Related to the Moon
When the universe was being created, Lord Brahma created many species, one of whom was King Daksha. Daksha married his 27 daughters to Lord Chandra (the Moon). These 27 daughters are represented by the Nakshatras (lunar constellations) in astrology.
Lord Chandra had promised to treat all his wives equally. But he showed special affection for Rohini, his most beautiful and beloved wife, and neglected the others.
When the other daughters complained to their father, Daksha, about Chandra's biased behaviour, he became very angry. He angrily cursed Chandra:
'O Chandra! You will suffer from a wasting disease and gradually weaken.'
Due to this curse, Chandra's radiance began to diminish, and he gradually weakened. This caused great distress among the gods, as the Moon was essential for plants and medicinal herbs.
Following the advice of the gods, Chandra performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. For many years, he chanted the mantra 'Om Namah Shivaya' to appease Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance and partially lifted Daksha's curse, though not completely. He said:
'O Moon! You will gradually diminish in size every day, but then you will become full again and grow. In this way, you will increase in size during the waxing phase of the lunar cycle and decrease during the waning phase.' Therefore, even today, the size of the moon changes every month, which we observe as the cycle from new moon to full moon and then back to new moon. Lord Shiva placed the moon on his head. Since then, he has been called Chandrashekhar, meaning 'the one with the moon on his head.'
