Mythological Story Related to Mercury

In ancient times, Jupiter was regarded as the leader of the gods. The Moon once organised the Rajasuya Yagna and invited Jupiter to serve as the chief priest. However, for unknown reasons, he declined the invitation and sent his wife, Tara, in his place. During the Yagna, the Moon was attracted by Tara's beauty, leading to a physical relationship between them, and Tara subsequently became pregnant.

When Tara returned, Jupiter questioned her about the pregnancy. Tara confessed that the child belongs to the Moon. Enraged, Deva Guru Brihaspati cursed both Tara and the Moon, declaring that their child would be genderless and would lack identity in life.

This child, born of Tara, was the planet Mercury, who came into existence without a defined gender and faced inner turmoil as a result. Despite his dislike towards the Moon, Mercury performed penance in the Himalayas and earned blessings from Lord Narayana. In recognition of his efforts, Narayana granted Mercury a special place among the planets, transforming him into a symbol of intelligence and communication.
