The Panchbhut Sthal (site) is five ancient temples of Lord Shiva located in South India. Which were created around 3500 thousand years ago as a means of developing human consciousness. In Hinduism, the five elements of nature, fire, air, earth, sky and water worship have been given a lot of recognition.
Of these five temples, Srikalahasti temple is located in Andra Pradesh and Ekambareswar, Arunachaleswarar, Tilai Nataraja, Jambukeshwar temple is located in Tamil Nadu. The five temples have been constructed according to yogic science and all the temples are in a special type of geographical alignment with each other.
Srikalahasti Temple:
This temple was built by cutting the tip of a hill on the banks of the Swarnamukhi River, also known as Kalahasti. In the temple, Kalahstishvara lord was consecrated for the air element. In the name Srikalahasti, Sri refers to spider, Kala to snake and Hasti to elephant. It is believed that these three animals worshiped Lord Shiva here and then he got liberation. This temple holds special significance for Rahukal puja. The temple complex has a hundred pillared pavilion which makes the temple unique.
Ekambareswarar Temple:
This temple is the most magnificent and historic Shiva temple located in Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu. Lord Shiva is worshiped here as Prithvi Tattva and is called Prithvi Lingam. Ekambaresvara means the deity of the mango tree. This linga of Lord Shiva is situated under a mango tree. This tree gives the symbol of four Vedas and four different flavored mangoes. This thousand year old temple was rebuilt by the kings of Pallava Dynasty, Pandya Dynasty, Chola Dynasty. There are a total of 1008 Shiva Lingam idols in the sanctum sanctorum.
Arunachaleswarar Temple:
The Arunachaleswarar temple at Tiruvannamalai was built for the fire element. It is situated in the foothills of the Annamalai Hills. There are many popular stories here, one of which according to legend, Shiva transformed himself into a fire element by touching the earth and heaven.
Tilai Nataraja Temple:
This temple of Shiva located in Chidambaram is dedicated as the great Nataraja. Which has been created in the form of sky element. Nataraja is a representation of the euphoria of creation. A depiction of 108 postures of Indian classical dance is found here. The life of the temple was established by Patanjali, the father of yoga science.
Jambukeswarar Temple:
This temple was built for the water element of nature. It is said that Lord Shiva himself used to build the temple walls. A unique thing about the temple is that the priests here dress up like women after noon for worship. It is said that here Parvati Mata had done penance and built Shivalinga from the water of Cauvery river. These were the grand ancient Panchbhuta sites of Shiva to represent the elements of nature.
