Lord Krishna explains to Yudhishthira that the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of the month of Vaishakh is known as Varuthini Ekadashi, and its sacred story is as follows:
Once upon a time, there was a king named Mandhata who ruled over a kingdom situated on the banks of the River Narmada. He was an exceptionally charitable and devoted soul. One day, he went to the forest for deep penance just like other days. Suddenly, a wild bear emerged from the forest and began to bite the foot of the King, who was completely absorbed in his meditation, but the King remained so deeply immersed in his penance that he did not feel any pain. After a while, while biting on the King's legs, the bear dragged him away. When the King regained consciousness, he was terrified, but bound by penance, he could not show anger or violence toward the bear.
Overwhelmed by fear and pain, the King cried out to Lord Vishnu for help. At that moment, Lord Vishnu appeared and killed the bear with his Chakra. However, the bear had already completely devoured the King's legs, leaving him in a state of deep distress. So, Lord Vishnu advised the King to go to Mathura and observe the Varuthini Ekadashi fast with proper rituals, so that his wish might be fulfilled. The King did exactly as instructed, and his limbs were restored, and he regained his former beautiful and charming appearance. It is believed that Lord Vishnu grants His divine vision to anyone who observes a fast dedicated to Him with proper devotion and rituals.
