On the day of Sharad Purnima, worshipping the moon is considered highly auspicious. The Moon also contains some healing properties and nourishing effects for both body and mind.
To receive its blessings, devotees prepare kheer and leave it overnight under the moonlight, and the next morning it is considered energised by the moon and consumed as prasad.
This year, the Ashwin Purnima tithi will begin at 11:55 AM on 25 October and will end at 09:41 AM on 26 October 2026. Therefore, Sharad Purnima will be celebrated on 25 October 2026. Moonrise on Sharad Purnima day will be at 05:00 PM.
According to Hindu beliefs, on the night of Sharad Purnima, Lord Krishna performed the "Maharaas" in the Dwapar Yug under the full moon. On the night of Sharad Purnima, all the Gopis came out of their houses after hearing Lord Krishna's flute to dance with him.
It is believed that, on this day, Lord Krishna created several Krishnas (avatars of himself) to dance with each Gopi. He stretched the night to the one night of Brahma Lok, which is equal to billions of human years. Impressed by the maharaas, Chandradev showered amrit on the earth.
Another story related to this ritual is that Goddess Lakshmi came down to earth on the day of Sharad Purnima, and offering her favourite sweet kheer and then consuming it as prasad brings her blessings of prosperity and happiness.
