Pitru Paksha Shradh has been described in the scriptures as a time to show respect and reverence to the ancestors. It is mentioned in the Puranas that Yamraj also frees the souls of ancestors on these days so that they can be satisfied by staying with their family members for 15 days by taking food and water of Shradh. This year Ashwin Krishna Paksha is starting on 21st September. Therefore, Pitru Paksha Shradh will start from 21st September itself. But in the scriptures, another rule has also been mentioned in the context of Pitru Paksha, due to which Pitru Puja will start from September 20 itself.
Bhadra Purnima Shradh is done to honor them
, Bhadra Purnima Tithi is on 20th September. The first tarpan will be done on this day. This full moon date is also called Rishi Tarpan Tithi. On this day, offerings are made to the seer Rishi Muni August. In fact, he once drank the ocean and ate two demons to protect the sages and humans. Therefore, as a mark of respect, the Pitru Paksha begins by offering tarpan to August Muni on the day of Bhadra Purnima.
Significance
of Pitru Paksha Pitru Paksha has special significance in Hinduism. Even after death, ancestors are remembered from time to time in Hinduism and Shradh Paksha is a festival of expressing their gratitude towards them and donating for them. It is believed that if Shradh is not performed, then the soul of the dying person does not get salvation.
