The story states that there was a devoted girl named Veeravati. After marriage, she observed her first Karwa Chauth fast. During the fast, her health started deteriorating due to hunger and thirst, and she fell unconscious on the floor. Her seven brothers could not bear to see her sister's problem, so they lit a fire behind the hill, showed a fake moon through a sieve, and told their sister that the Moon had come out. Believing the diya to be the Moon, she broke her fast and put the first bite of food in her mouth; she got the news that her husband had died. To bring her husband back to life, Veeravati, crying, performed difficult penance for Goddess Parvati. Goddess Parvati appeared and told her that you had broken your fast without seeing the Moon.

Veeravati apologized for her mistake and again observed the fast of Karwa Chauth with all the rules and rituals. Pleased with her devotion, Karwa Mata and Goddess Parvati gave life to her husband again. It is said that by observing the fast of Karwa Chauth, the husband gets the blessing of long life and a happy married life.
