Every year, Ganga Dussehra falls on the Dashmi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Jyeshtha month. On this auspicious day, Goddess Ganga is worshipped with great reverence, and Lord Shiva is worshipped alongside her, because Maa Ganga descended to the Earth with the Jata (Matted hairs)of Lord Shiva. The references to Ganga Dussehra can be found in the Shiv Puran.
When the Maharaja approached the sage seeking a remedy for the funeral rites and the attainment of salvation for his sons, the sage advised him that the River Ganga, which at that time flowed in the heavens, would have to be brought down to Earth. Later, Maharaja Sagar, King Dilip, and his son, Bhagirath, began to perform severe penance. Pleased by Bhagirath's self-discipline, Lord Brahma appeared before him and offered him to ask for a boon. Bhagirath requested to bring Maa Ganga down to Earth. Lord Brahma warned that if Ganga were brought directly, the Earth would be swept away due to the immense force of her current. He also said that only Lord Shiva has the power to fulfill this specific wish. Bhagirath travelled to Mount Kailash to perform penance dedicated to Lord Shiva. After some time, Lord Shiva was deeply pleased by Bhagirath's penance and his unwavering faith. After that, Lord Shiva pledged to fulfill his wish and brought Maa Ganga down to Earth through his own matted locks (Jataye). The moment River Ganga touched the Earth, that place began to resemble heaven itself. According to the scriptures, the River Ganga will continue to flow even after the end of Kalyug.
