Chaturmas 2021: When is Chaturmas starting? Know its importance and rules

During Chaturmas, all kinds of Manglik works are banned. However, the month of Chaturmas is considered favorable for religious deeds and charity. It is believed that during this period Lord Shiva governs the creation and, pleased with the charity, worship and recitation done in Bholenath Chaturmas, soon gives desired boon to the devotees.

When is Chaturmas Start Date-

Chaturmas starts from the eleventh day of Shukla Paksha of Ashadha month. Chaturmas has great importance in Hinduism. While many works are prohibited in Chaturmas, some works done in this month also give auspicious results. Chaturmas begins with Devshayani Ekadashi. This time Chaturmas is starting from 20th July and will end on 14th November on Ekadashi Tithi of Kartik month.

What is Chaturmas

Devshayani Ekadashi fast is observed every year on the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha. It is believed that on this day Lord Vishnu hands over the entire creation to Lord Shiva and himself goes to sleep in Kshirsagar. After this Lord Vishnu wakes up on Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. This period of Lord Vishnu's sleeping period is of four months. That is why this period is called Chaturmas.

Significance of Chaturmas

Manglik works are banned during Chaturmas. However, the month of Chaturmas is considered favorable for religious deeds and charity. It is believed that during this period Lord Shiva governs the creation and, pleased with the charity, worship and recitation done in Bholenath Chaturmas, soon gives desired boon to the devotees. However, during this time it is forbidden to do some works.

These works are not done in Chaturmas

Special attention is paid to food during Chaturmas. In these four months, eating greens, green vegetables, curd, milk and pulses is considered taboo. Apart from this, meat, alcohol and vengeful food should also be avoided during this period. Eating in a bronze vessel is also considered a taboo. Applying oil on the body and sleeping on the bed is also prohibited during this time.

Work to be done in Chaturmas

During Chaturmas, the people should wake up early in the morning and take bath. Wearing clean clothes, worship Lord Vishnu and chant his mantras every day. Chanting of Vishnu Sahasranamam during this period is considered particularly fruitful. Yellow flowers, fruits and yellow sweets should be offered to Lord Vishnu. During this time, it is auspicious to observe celibacy and do charity.
