According to mythological beliefs, during the Samudra manthan, a deadly poison, Halahal, emerged, and to protect the world, Lord Shiva consumed it. The poison created intense heat within his body, and to reduce its impact, the gods and goddesses offered Gangajal and cool water to Lord Shiva, bringing relief and calmness. The tradition of pouring water over the Shivling originated from this event. This is why Jalabhishek holds special significance during the month of Sawan.
The Shiv Puran states that among all deities, Lord Shiva is the only one who is easily pleased by simple worship. He values devotion and a pure heart more than gold, gems, or luxury items. During the month of Sawan, performing a Jalabhishek with mere clean water, faith, and devotion is considered extremely fruitful. It is believed that jalabhishek brings peace of mind, deepens devotion to Lord Shiva, and brings positivity in life.
To perform Jalabhishek, wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. After that, visit a temple or sit at your place of worship at home and chant the mantra of Lord Shiva. Take clean water or Gangajal in a copper vessel, and offer it on the Shivling while maintaining your focus on Lord Shiva. After the Jalabhishek, you can offer belpatra, white sandalwood paste, bhasma, dhatura, bhang, Aak flowers, white flowers, and seasonal fruits. While offering the belpatra, make sure that all three leaflets are intact and the leaf is not damaged. Traditionally, Ketaki flowers and red flowers are not offered to Lord Shiva.
While performing Jalabhishek, chanting Lord Shiva’s Panchakshari Mantra "Om Namah Shivaya " is considered extremely auspicious, and chanting this month with a pure heart is deemed more auspicious it is deemed. Chanting it 108 times is considered ideal. Mahamrityunjaya Mantra is chanted especially at the time of Jalabhishek. According to religious belief, this mantra is considered very important for seeking the blessings of Lord Shiva, health, mental peace, and spiritual progress.
Om Trimbakam Yajamahe Sugandhi Pushtivardhanam.
Urvarukamiv Bandhananmrityormukshiya Mamritat॥
