Kamakhya Temple Siddhi Peeth situated on the Nilgiri Mountains, two miles west of Guwahati, Assam, is known as Kamakhya Temple. It is mentioned in Kalika Purana. Kamakhya Temple is considered to be the oldest Shaktipeeth.According to the beliefs, the part of mother Sati’s vagina fell at a place called Kamakhya. After this the holy temple of the goddess was established at this place. Kamakhya Devi Temple is one of the Shaktipeeths of Goddess Durga. Tantriks come to this temple to prove their accomplishments.

How Kamakhya Shaktipeeth was built
Mother Sati, enraged by her father’s behaviour, surrendered her body to the fire of the Havan Kund. Mahadev started doing tandav by keeping his body on his shoulder, due to which a situation of holocaust was created in the world. Then in order to save the world from the cataclysm, Lord Vishnu cut the body of Sati into several parts with the Sudarshan Chakra, wherever these pieces fell, those places were called Shaktipeeths. The vaginal part of Mother Sati had fallen at the place of Kamakhya. For this reason it is known as Kamakhya Devi. There are a total of 52 Shaktipeeths of Mata Sati, but one Shaktipeeth is located in Pakistan. There are a total of 51 Shaktipeeths in India.

Kind is worshipped                                                                 
Out of 51 Shaktipeeths, only Kamakhya temple has the status of Mahapeeth, but there is no picture and idol of Maa Durga and Maa Jagdamba in this temple. Devotees worship by offering flowers at a pool built in the temple. This pool is kept covered with flowers as the pool is a part of the vagina of Goddess Sati, which is worshiped by the devotees. Water always leaks from this pool. For this reason it is kept covered with flowers.

River water turns red

According to the belief, the water of the Brahmaputra river turns red for three days. The reason for this is said to be the menstruation of Goddess Kamakhya. This happens every year only during the Ambuvachi fair. During these three days a large influx of devotees throngs this temple. Red colored cotton cloth is offered to the devotees as prasad.
