Dev Diwali is considered the Diwali of the Gods, which is celebrated 15 days after the Diwali festival. In this article, we will tell you the significance and story behind celebrating Dev Diwali.
Every year, Dev Diwali is celebrated on the Purnima Tithi of the month of Kartik. This year, the Purnima Tithi will begin on 4th November 2025 at 10:36 PM and end on 5th November 2025 at 6:48 PM. Therefore, Dev Diwali will be celebrated on 5th November 2025.
This year, several auspicious yogas and muhurats are being formed on Dev Diwali.
Brahma Muhurat: 4:52 AM to 5:44 AM
Vijay Muhurat: 1:54 PM to 2:28 PM
Godhuli Muhurat: 5:33 PM to 5:59 PM
Nishita Muhurat: 5 November from 11:39 PM to 6 November at 12:31 AM.
On this day, worshipping Lord Shiva during these special timings is considered highly auspicious and brings his blessings.
According to the beliefs, the story of Dev Diwali is linked to the demon Tripurasura. Once, there was a demon named Tripurasura who performed severe penance to please Lord Brahma and asked for the boon to be immortal. However, Lord Brahma refused to grant this boon. Then he requested a boon to make it impossible to kill him.
Then Lord Brahma said that he should only be killed during the Abhijit Muhurat and by a single arrow. Tripurasura began doing evil deeds, sin throughout the three worlds. His wrongdoings became unbearable, and all the gods were distressed by this. After that, all the Gods requested Lord Shiva to kill Tripurasura. On the day of Kartik Purnima, during the Abhijit Muhurat, Lord Shiva killed Tripurasura with a single arrow, restoring peace.
This is why Lord Shiva is also called Tripuri, and it is considered highly auspicious to worship him on the Kartik Purnima (Dev Diwali)
