Bhadrapada Purnima Vrat 2024

In Hinduism, the full moon day, known as Purnima, holds special significance. On Bhadrapada Purnima, people worship Lord Vishnu in his Satyanarayana form. This day also marks the observance of the Uma-Maheshwar Vrat. Additionally, Bhadrapada Purnima marks the beginning of the Pitru Paksha, a period dedicated to honoring ancestors, which continues until the Amavasya (new moon) of the Ashwin month.

Bhadrapada Purnima Auspicious Timing

According to the Panchang (Hindu calendar), the Purnima Tithi (lunar day) for Bhadrapada begins on September 17 at 11:44 AM and continues until September 18 at 08:04 AM. Therefore, the Purnima Vrat will be observed on September 17, while the main celebration of Bhadrapada Purnima will occur on September 18.

Bhadrapada Purnima Auspicious Yoga

Astrological calculations suggest that on Bhadrapada Purnima, a special yoga called Shivvas Yoga will be formed. This yoga will start on September 17 at 08:05 AM. Performing rituals and prayers during this auspicious time is believed to be especially beneficial.

Bhadrapada Purnima Vrat Puja Rituals

According to religious beliefs, worshipping Lord Satyanarayana on Bhadrapada Purnima removes all hardships and brings prosperity and happiness. Here’s how to perform the vrat:

  • On Purnima day, wake up early and make a vow to observe the vrat. Clean your house thoroughly.

  • After bathing, wear yellow clothes as Lord Vishnu is fond of this color. If possible, bathe in a sacred river.

  • Next, offer water to the Sun God (Surya Dev) as part of the ritual.

  • Place images of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi on a worship platform (puja chowki). Offer fruits, flowers, and clothes to them, and present sixteen items of adornment to Goddess Lakshmi.

  • Light a lamp (diya) and perform the Aarti. Recite relevant mantras for Vishnu and Lakshmi.

  • After the puja, listen to the story of Lord Satyanarayana, and distribute Panchamrit and Churma (sweet dish) as prasad.

  • Donate food, money, or clothes to a needy person or a Brahmin on this day.

Uma-Maheshwar Vrat

According to the Vishnu Purana, the Uma-Maheshwar Vrat is observed on the third day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase) of the Margashirsha month. However, the Narada Purana states that this vrat is observed on Bhadrapada Purnima. The vrat is meant to bring wise children and good fortune, especially for women. On this day, set up images of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati at the worship place and offer incense, lamps, fragrances, flowers, and pure ghee (clarified butter) as offerings.

Story of Uma-Maheshwar Vrat

The story of this vrat is found in the Matsya Purana. According to the tale, once Sage Durvasa visited Lord Shiva and then met Lord Vishnu on his way back. Sage Durvasa gifted a garland of Bilva leaves given by Lord Shiva to Lord Vishnu. Instead of wearing it himself, Lord Vishnu placed it around the neck of his mount, Garuda. This action angered Sage Durvasa, who then cursed that the grace of Goddess Lakshmi would be withdrawn from Lord Vishnu, and he would be deprived of help from the Kshir Sagar (Milky Ocean) and Sheshnag (serpent). Sage Durvasa advised Lord Vishnu to perform the Uma-Maheshwar Vrat to overcome these troubles. Following this vrat, Lord Vishnu regained the grace of Goddess Lakshmi and all his divine powers.
