Description

Why is Ganga Dussehra Celebrated?

  • Ganga Dussehra is an immensely sacred festival, celebrated as the day of Maa Ganga's descent upon the Earth. According to stories or katha, it is said that, pleased by the rigorous penance of King Bhagirath, Maa Ganga descended from heaven to Earth so that Bhagirath's ancestors could attain Moksha. On this day, taking a holy dip in the Ganga, performing acts of charity or daan, and offering prayers leads to the eradication of ten types of sins, hence, this festival is known as "Dussehra."

Ganga Dussehra Maha Puja and Anusthan

  • Kashi is known as Shivnagari (the City of Lord Shiva), and special worship ceremonies are organised at the Panchganga Ghat on the auspicious occasion of Ganga Dussehra. Marking this sacred occasion, MyJyotish is organising a special Mahapuja and Vedic ritual ceremony at Panchganga, Kashi. On this auspicious day, anusthan such as abhishekam, offering of flowers, deepdaan, and the Ganga Aarti are performed for Maa Ganga. The worship is conducted by expert pandits accompanied by the chanting of Vedic mantras, rendering the entire atmosphere filled with devotion and divinity. Devotees participate in this ritual by taking a sankalp for the happiness, prosperity, and peace of their families, as well as for the liberation of their ancestors. It is believed that puja performed at the Panchganga Ghat gives exceptionally fruitful results and infuses positive energy into one's life.

Panchganga Ghat holds deep historical and mythological significance and is a popular spot for devotees and tourists to witness the morning Ganga Aarti. This soulful 'aarti' is performed in praise of Goddess Ganga and highlights the divine purpose of the ghat. During the aarti, priests come to the central platform and perform several elaborate rituals, including the lighting of oil lamps, chanting, and offerings, making it a truly captivating and spiritually enriching experience.

Panchganga Ghat is the place where five sacred rivers are said to converge, although only one is visible today, with the other four believed to have merged into the earth. Another interesting fact is that Panchganga Ghat was used as a teaching ground by Vedanta Ramananda, the guru of Kabir, one of India's most renowned saints. It is also said that the great saint-poet Tulsidas wrote the 'Vinaya Patrika' at this very ghat.
