Why Nirjala Ekadashi Gives the Merit of All 24 Ekadashis?
There are 24 Ekadashis in a year, but the number increases to 26 during Adhik Maas. Consuming food is prohibited on every Ekadashi, but on Nirjala Ekadashi, consuming water is also forbidden. The month of Jyeshtha is considered the hottest throughout the year, which is why observing a fast on this day is considered extremely difficult. Therefore, Nirjala Ekadashi is most comparable to other Ekadashi fasts.
What is the Connection of Nirjala Ekadashi With Lord Vishnu?
Ekadashi fasts are observed throughout the year, which are dedicated to Lord Vishnu. These fasts are considered significant for pleasing Lord Vishnu, attaining salvation (moksha), and receiving spiritual benefits. Why is Nirjala Ekadashi known as Bhimseni Ekadashi?
The Nirjala Ekadashi is also known as Bhimseni Ekadashi, as it holds a special connection to the Pandavas of the Mahabharat. Among all the Pandavas, Bhimseni was renowned for his immense physical strength but had a deep love for food. It is said that whenever Yudhishthir, Arjun, Nakul, Sehdev, and their mother Kunti observed the Ekadashi fast, Bhimseni also wished to join them for fasting, but his irresistible hunger made it difficult to do so.
One day, Bhimsena went to the great sage Ved Vyas, and he said, " Gurudev, I can't tolerate hunger, as my stomach burns with fire known as Vikra, which needs enough food to be appeased. This makes it difficult to observe any Ekadashis fast, but I also wish to fulfil my religious duties. Each member of my family observes a fast on all 24 Ekadashis, and I am unable to observe any fast. If this remains the same, I will be unable to receive the grace of Lord Vishnu. Please suggest a remedy that will help me to attain the spiritual merit of observing all Ekadashis fast."
Upon hearing this, Sage Ved Vyas replied, " If you wish to gain the spiritual merit of all the Ekadashis, you must observe a fast on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of the Jyeshtha month. You will need to meditate and chant the name of Lord Vishnu, refraining from both food and water, and continuously chant Lord Vishnu's great mantra, 'Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevay Namah.'
After this, Bhimsena vowed to observe this fast. He observed the fast with immense faith and devotion. Since that day, the day has become known as Bhimsena Ekadashi.
