Maa Ganga Descending to Earth (Gangavataran Story)
In Ayodhya, Maharaja Sagar used to live, who was also considered an ancestor of Lord Ram. Maharaja Sagar wished to perform the Ashwamedha Yajna (sacrificial ritual) within his kingdom, involving his sixty thousand sons. But, upon seeing King Sagar's growing strength and power, Lord Indra moved the horse from the ritual site and hid it in the hermitage (Ashram) of Sage Kapila, disrupting King Sagar's yajna. Maharaja Sagar commanded his sons to locate and retrieve the horse. After a prolonged search, they found the horse in the hermitage of Sage Kapila.
After seeing this, filled with anger and rage, the King's sons started insulting Sage Kapila, who was performing deep penance. This act disrupted Sage's penance, and when he opened his eyes, the intense spiritual energy instantly turned Maharaja Sagar's sons to ashes. He also cursed them that their souls would never get salvation (Moksha) and would be unable to find peace until the water of the River Ganga washed over their ashes. At that time, the River Ganga used to flow in the heavens.
Maharaja Sagar issued a command to his sons to locate and retrieve the horse. Obeying their father's command, all the sons set out in search of the horse. After a prolonged search, they discovered the horse tied up at Sage Kapila's hermitage (Ashram). Later, filled with anger and rage, the King's sons began to insult the sage. This act disturbed the sage's deep penance, and the intense spiritual energy radiating from Sage Kapila's eyes instantly turned Maharaja Sagara's sons to ashes.
The Story of King Bhagiratha and Maa Ganga
According to the beliefs, the descendant of the Suryavanshi Ikshvaku dynasty, King Bhagiratha, performed severe penance for the salvation (Moksha) of his ancestors' souls. Pleased by his penance, Maa Ganga agreed to descend to Earth, which earlier flowed in the heavens, but the Earth lacked the strength, and if the Ganga brought to the Earth would be swept away due to the immense force of her current. Therefore, Bhagiratha again began to perform penance dedicated to Lord Shiva. Pleased by his devotion and discipline, Lord Shiva assured Bhagiratha that he would bring Goddess Ganga down to the Earth through his Jataye (Matted Hairs). It is believed that the River Ganga descended upon Earth on the Dashmi Tithi of the Jyeshtha Shukla Paksha. Since then, the day is celebrated as Ganga Dussehra.
