Panchganga Ghat holds historical significance and is one of the famous ghats of Varanasi. The history of the ghats dates back to the 11th century and is described in the "Kashi Khanda" of the Skanda Purana. This text reveals that Panchganga Ghat is the second most important ghat after Dashashwamedh Ghat.
During ...the Garhwal dynasty period of the 11th and 12th centuries, this place was known as Bindumadhav Ghat, where the royal family preferred Panchganga Ghat over Dashashwamedh Ghat.
This ghat is called Panchganga because it is believed to be situated at the confluence of five sacred rivers: Ganga, Saraswati, Khalu, Dhutapapa, Yamuna, and Kirana. Today, only the Ganga is clearly visible in the area; the other five or four rivers are said to have merged into Mother Earth. Another interesting fact is that Panchganga Ghat was used as a teaching place by Vedanta Ramananda, the guru of Kabir, one of the most famous saints of India. It is also said that the great saint-poet Tulsidas wrote 'Vinay Patrika' at this very ghat.
