According to Hindu scriptures, Mangalnath Temple is believed to be the birthplace of Mars. The temple is located on the banks of the Shipra River and is considered a sacred pilgrimage site for performing rituals related to Mangal Dosha in one's horoscope. In Hindu astrology, Lord Mangal is endowed with qualities like energy, courage and vitality. Devotees worship at the Mangalnath Temple to seek blessings and strength, protection and success in endeavours.
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Ujjain's Mangalnath Temple is considered one of the Navgraha temples, which is especially associated with Mangal (Mars). In many places, Mangaldev is considered a celibate but in some places his consort is Jwalini Devi. Mangal Dev's vehicle is a sheep and he holds a trident, mace, lotus and spear or shool in his hands. Mars is the ruler of Aries and Scorpio signs.
