Janmashtami, or more popularly known as Krishna Janmashtami, is the birthday of Lord Krishna which is celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm during the monsoon month in India. Makhan Mishri is considered to be the favorite food of Lord Krishna. It is said that mother Yashoda herself used to feed Krishna his favorite sweet Makhan Mishri (sweet white butter), Krishna was so fond of Makhan that he would even go to his village to steal butter. Hence he is also specially known as Makhan Chor. On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami, devotees prepare special offerings for Lord Shri Krishna.
Makhan Mishri is a mixture of fresh white butter with a sprinkling of coarsely ground sugar candy. Makhan Mishri is an essential item of Bhog Chappan Bhog (traditional 56 items prepared for offering to Bal Gopal, it is first offered to Lord Krishna and then it is distributed to others as Prasad.
