Lord Shani refers to the planet Saturn. According to Hindu astrology, Shani is also one of the auspicious Navgrahas. Lord Shani is also a male deity who is a handsome looking man sitting on a vulture, buffalo or crow. He is the son of Lord Surya. The practice of offering oil to Lord Shani has been going on since ancient times. It symbolizes the removal of all sorrows. It is also believed that Lord Shani became generous towards his devotee after his suffering was removed - otherwise he was very afraid of his anger.
