Description

  • What is Ganga Saptami?

Ganga Saptami is an extremely sacred festival in Hinduism, celebrated as the day of Maa Ganga's reappearance on Earth. It is believed that on this very day, Maa Ganga once again came to Earth. This day is considered particularly auspicious for taking a holy dip in the Ganges, performing acts of charity (Daan), and offering worship. The Ganga is considered "Mokshadayini" and "Paap Nashini"; therefore, worshipping her on Ganga Saptami is believed to alleviate all of life's afflictions and purify the soul. With this in mind, 'MyJyotish' is organising a Deepdaan and Ganga Aarti at the Panch Ganga Ghat in the Kashi region. Additionally, on this day, a yellow chunari will be offered to Maa Ganga.

  • The Legend of Ganga Saptami

According to legend, it is said that Maa Ganga descended to Earth on the festival of Ganga Dussehra. Even after emerging from Lord Shiva's hair, her force remained extremely forceful. Due to the heavy velocity of Maa Ganga's flow, the ashram of Rishi Jahnu was swept away. Enraged by this, Rishi Jahnu, in a fit of anger, drank up the entire river Ganga. Subsequently, following the earnest pleas of the celestial deities, the Rishi released the Ganga once again—this time, through his ear. It is said that the Saptami of the Shukla Paksha during the month of Vaishakh marks the precise date on which Maa Ganga once again came upon the Earth. So, just imagine how immensely fruitful the worship of Maa Ganga would be on the sacred occasion of Ganga Saptami.

Panchganga Ghat holds deep historical and mythological significance and is a popular spot for devotees and tourists to witness the morning Ganga Aarti. This soulful 'aarti' is performed in praise of Goddess Ganga and highlights the divine purpose of the ghat. During the aarti, priests come to the central platform and perform several elaborate rituals, including the lighting of oil lamps, chanting, and offerings, making it a truly captivating and spiritually enriching experience.

Panchganga Ghat is the place where five sacred rivers are said to converge, although only one is visible today, with the other four believed to have merged into the earth. Another interesting fact is that Panchganga Ghat was used as a teaching ground by Vedanta Ramananda, the guru of Kabir, one of India's most renowned saints. It is also said that the great saint-poet Tulsidas wrote the 'Vinaya Patrika' at this very ghat.
