In Hinduism, there are several special dates on which married women observe a fast for their husbands and pray for their long life; the Vat Savitri Vrat is one such significant occasion.
'Vat' refers to the Banyan tree, which has been accorded the status of the National Tree. The Vat Savitri Vrat occurs annually on the Amavasya Tithi (New Moon day) of the month of Jyeshtha. This observance is rooted in the legend of Savitri and Satyavan, illustrating how a wife's love and devotion can protect her husband's life. In this context, let us find out when the Vat Savitri Vrat will be observed this year and what auspicious alignments will prevail for the rituals on this day. This year, the Amavasya Tithi of the month of Jyeshtha will commence on the morning of May 16th at 5:11 AM and will conclude on the night of May 17th at 1:30 AM. Consequently, the Vat Savitri Vrat will be observed on May 16th. Several Auspicious Conjunctions to Form on Vat Savitri
It is worth noting that on the occasion of Vat Savitri, the Banyan tree is worshipped. The reason behind this practice is that the Banyan tree is considered a symbol of longevity, stability, and prosperity. Associated with this fast is the legend of Savitri and Satyavan, a tale that exemplifies the extraordinary power of a devoted and virtuous wife. Savitri chose Satyavan as her husband, even though she was aware that his lifespan was destined to be short. One year after their marriage, while they were in the forest, Satyavan passed away. When Yamraj (the God of Death) arrived to claim his soul, Savitri followed closely behind him. Through her intellect, patience, and unwavering devotion, she managed to please Yamraj. Yamraj then told her, "I cannot return Satyavan to you, but I can grant you one wish." Savitri replied, "I desire children as a boon"a wish that could not possibly be fulfilled unless Satyavan were alive. Ultimately, Yamraj restored Satyavan to life. Thus, through her love and steadfast determination, Savitri saved her husband from death. Since that time, married women have observed this fast to safeguard their marital life and pray for the longevity of their husbands.
