Shani Jayanti is observed every year on the Amavasya Tithi of the Jyeshtha month. This year, the Amavasya Tithi will begin on 16th May at 5:11 AM, and will end on 17th May at 1:30 AM.
Lord Shani is the son of Lord Surya. According to beliefs, when Lord Surya went, his wife, Chhaya, could not bear his intense radiance and closed her eyes. By the time Lord Shani was born from Chhaya's womb, on the Amavasya Tithi of the Jyeshtha month. But Suryadev was not pleased upon seeing this, as Shani was Shyam Varna, which means dark complexion. While Suryadev has a fierce, blazing radiance, Lord Shani was of a dark complexion, and upon seeing this, Suryadev accused his wife, Chhaya, that this child cannot be his own. This is the reason, despite being father and son, they are like enemies. Lord Shani felt deeply humiliated by this accusation. Afterwards, he performed intense penance for many years to seek a boon from Lord Shiva. Pleased by Lord Shani's devotion, Lord Shiva appeared. Shani described his entire story to Lord Shiva, and in response, the Lord granted him the boon that he would be revered as the greatest among all the Navagrahas (planets) and would be known as the ultimate Judge of this universe.
