When is Nag Panchami?

In the Hindu Dharm, the festival of Nag Panchami has special significance as it falls during the auspicious month of Sawan. Nag Panchami falls on the Panchami tithi of the Shukla Paksha of the Shravan month. Therefore, this year, it will be celebrated on 17 August 2026. Serpents are worshipped on this day, and this festival is celebrated to express respect and reverence towards the serpents. Nagas and snakes are deeply connected to Lord Shiva, and to receive his blessings, one should worship Nag Devta. But where does this tradition of worshipping serpents come from? And who first celebrated this festival? Here, we will tell you the complete information about the story behind Nag Panchami.

Mythological Story Behind Nag Panchami

In Dwapar Yug, after the death of Yudhishthir, King Parikshit took over the empire. After ruling for years, King Parikshit came to know that he was going to die in upcoming seven days due to a snakebite, and within seven days, he was bitten by a snake named Takshaya and died. After Parikshit, his son Janamejaya was declared the next king. When King Janamejaya came to know that his father died due to a snakebite, he became extremely furious and decided to kill all the snakes on the earth. He performed a yagya to burn all the snakes, due to which all the snakes started falling from the Earth into death. When Aastik Muni got to know about this yagya, he immediately came to King Janamejaya and requested him to stop the yagya. King Janamejaya followed the orders of the sages and stopped the yagya, which gave another life to all the snakes and serpents. Since then, snakes started being worshiped so that they would not become a threat to anyone and would protect everyone.
