Every year, during the 5-day festivities of Diwali, Yamdiya is lit every evening from Dhanteras till Bhai Dooj. It is placed outside the main entrance of the house, facing south (the south direction is considered to be the direction of Yamraj) and immersed(virsarjit) the next morning. It is believed that lighting Yamdiya on Dhanteras removes the fear of sudden death and brings blessings of long life and good health from Lord Yamraj(God of Death). This ritual is also known as Yam Deep Daan.
Lighting the Yam Deepak is believed to protect family members from sudden death. The ritual pleases Lord Yamraj and brings blessings of a long and healthy life. The scriptures state that lighting Yam Diya makes the soul free from all the sins and prevents it from entering hell after death. This ritual also removes negative energies from the home and fills the environment with positivity and peace.
