The five-day festivities of Diwali begin with Dhanteras. Dhanteras falls on the Trayodashi tithi of the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month and is considered extremely special for happiness, prosperity, and good health. According to religious beliefs, things are purchased on this day, which brings blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, and the house remains blessed throughout the year.
Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi. The word itself means wealth and prosperity. On this day, buying gold, silver, and vehicles is considered highly auspicious. Also, buying new clothes and utensils on this day is considered extremely auspicious.
On this day, Lord Dhanvantari is worshiped along with Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh. The scriptures state that Lord Dhanvantari is not only regarded as the God of wealth but also the God of Ayurveda. Many people worship Lord Kuber on this day, but according to ancient traditions, worshipping Lord Dhanvantari has special significance on Dhanteras.
In 2026, the Trayodashi tithi will begin on 6 November at 10:30 AM and will end on 7 November at 10:47 AM. The auspicious time of puja will be around 6:02 PM to 7:57 PM.
Metal: On this day, buying gold, silver coins, or jewelry is considered extremely auspicious.
Utensils: Buying brass or copper utensils is considered a symbol of health and good fortune. The new vessel should be filled with some water or rice and brought home.
Broom: On the day of Dhanteras, buying a new broom is considered very auspicious, because the broom is considered to be the form of Goddess Lakshmi, who drives out poverty from the house.
During the time of Samudra Manthan, when the gods and demons together churned the ocean, Lord Dhanvantari, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, appeared on the day of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi. When Lord Dhanvantari came out of the sea, he had a pot full of amrit in both his hands. He appeared to liberate the world from diseases and bless it with a healthy body. It is also believed that he appeared with a Kalash in his hand, which is why there is a tradition of buying new metal utensils on Dhanteras.
