The legend says that the demon Mahishasura had obtained many boons by doing penance. He had a boon that no god or demon could kill him. That’s why he used to harass everyone a lot and create panic. Then the gods prayed to Lord Shiva that how to escape from the Demons? Then he said that Goddess is the only solution. Together they worshipped the goddess, then a power arose from her, whose body was that of a woman, with eight arms. The meaning of eight arms is the one whose power moves in all eight directions. She was given a physical form by all the gods put together. Thus, she was a supreme power created with the combination of the powers of all the other gods. When she is blessed, her name becomes “Durga” or “Mangala”. Then God gifted their blessings and weapons. Lord Brahma gave the lotus. The lotus is a symbol of joy. Shiva gave the trident, Indra gave the thunderbolt, and Vishnu gave his conch. The conch shell is the reader of knowledge. Some gave a sword, some gave a bow, some gave a spear, and once gave a ride to a lion. Eight arms are shown in these eight arms. Her arms are like a warrior's. The goddess rode into battle on a lion. When the goddess killed Mahishasura, seeing her fierce form, all the gods prayed to her- goddess! calm down now. When she calmed down her name was “Kathyayini”. Her Rudra form is needed to kill the demons. When the goddess takes the form of Rudra, her name is “Kali”.
